Journey
Gerrie Pretorius was born on 19 October 1977 in Mossel Bay, a scenic coastal town in the Western Cape of South Africa. He grew up with a passion for music that would lead him far beyond his hometown.
Gerrie’s journey into the music world began in 2001, when he burst onto the scene with his debut hit “Annemarie My Skat.” The song struck gold quickly, earning platinum status and putting him firmly on the map in the Afrikaans music scene. From there, he followed up with a string of popular tracks like “Adio Amore”, “Sewe Sondes”, and “Die Stormers Song.”
Gerrie Pretorius is known for his versatility. While much of his repertoire is rooted in Afrikaans pop, he comfortably crosses into jazz and light classical styles. One of his notable achievements came in the form of his jazz album Swing, for which he received an honorary licentiate. He also paid tribute to one of South Africa’s beloved voices with his Bles Bridges tribute album, which earned significant acclaim.
Beyond his solo work, Gerrie collaborated internationally, performing and recording with well-known artists such as Dana Winner, Christoff (from Belgium), and Anny Schilder (from the Dutch band BZN). His collaboration with Anny Schilder even resulted in a hit in the Netherlands, highlighting his cross-border appeal.
Gerrie Pretorius has earned multiple gold and platinum albums over his career, confirming his lasting popularity in South Africa and beyond. He’s regarded as one of the major voices in the Afrikaans music world.
Gerrie is not only a singer. He has appeared on South African television, in soap operas and films, notably in the movie Ek Lief Jou, directed by Belgian filmmaker Ate de Jong. But perhaps one of his most beloved roles off the stage is as the host of the travel show Leef Jou Reis met Gerrie Pretorius on kykNET. Through the show, he brings his love of exploration to audiences, inviting them along on adventures.
Indeed, travel is a central passion for Gerrie. He’s an avid adventurer, often journeying through Africa in his 4×4 vehicle, exploring remote landscapes and cultures. He has visited more than 85 countries, according to his travel program’s promotional material.
Gerrie is also a businessman: he is active in the real estate industry as a property developer. In addition, he is deeply involved in counselling. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Theology and works as a registered counsellor. He is the director of Life Counsel South Africa, an organization focused on trauma counselling, grief support, and personal growth.
His greatest loves beyond music are travel and adventure, passions that clearly shine through both in his television work and his real-world trips.
Gerrie Pretorius has carved out a multifaceted career platinum-selling artist, television presenter, entrepreneur, counsellor, and adventurer. His music resonates with fans of Afrikaans pop and jazz, and his international collaborations show his broader appeal. At the same time, his work in counselling and his travel show highlight a deeper, more personal side: a man who seeks connection, both with people and with the wider world. For many, he stands not just as a singer but as a storyteller and guide, encouraging others to live fully.
